What can I expect during an echocardiogram?

You can expect to lie on an exam table, and your provider attaches three electrodes on your chest. These electrodes connect to an electrocardiograph (EKG) machine that tracks the electrical activity in your heart during your echocardiogram.
Your Marion Physician Associates provider applies a gel to your skin to help the hand-held wand move easily over your heart. The gel also ensures the wand is able to capture the clearest images of your heart structures.
An echocardiogram is painless. There may be slight pressure as your provider pushes down on the wand, but you won’t need any anesthesia. Following your test, you can go back to your usual activities without any recovery or limitations.
What happens if heart issues are found on my echocardiogram?
Your Marion Physician Associates doctor reviews the results of your echocardiogram during your appointment. In the event there are abnormalities found that relate to your heart health or function, your doctor may request additional diagnostic testing.
